When planning your wedding flowers, the key to getting a co-ordinated look is to either match or to contrast the flowers, against the colour of your bridesmaids dresses.
As members of New Zealand Professional Florists, we have studied the use of colour in flower design, and are able to guide you towards creating the look and the feeling you want to achieve with colour harmonies.
For more information on colour harmonies - see the right hand column.

SOME USEFUL POINTERS ARE:
- White on white - gives you a clean, longer, slimmer sillouhette.
- Matching colour flowers on the bridesmaids dresses
As above but you do need to be aware of the colours in regards to the photography - we don't want the bouquets to get "lost".
- Contrasting flowers - e.g. Red flowers on a white dress.
Will show off the flowers to maximum effect -very bold look, will look strong in photos but it may diminish the detail in your wedding gown as the focus will be on the flowers.
ie shades of pinks on a burgundy dress - will give you a romantic, pretty and very co-ordinated look.

| THE COLOUR WHEEL |
| The colour wheel - used for creating colour harmonies and matching your wedding flowers to your Bridesmaids gowns. |
CREATING A COLOUR HARMONY |
Working within a colour harmony for your bridal bouquets will create a co-ordinated look that is pleasing to the eye, enhances your wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses and gives you gorgeous wedding photos.
The right colour matching can even make you look slimmer!
- ANALOGOUS COLOURS -White flowers on white wedding dress
| Analogous colours are any three colours which are side by side on a 12 part colour wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Usually one of the three colours predominates.
In relation to wedding flowers, this is why white flowers with greenery in several shades from lime to dark forest green, look so good against white wedding gowns.
White on white gives you a clean, fresh look, it will make you look taller and slimmer as it does not "cut your sillouhette in half", the soft, restful colour harmony will certainly be pleasing to the eye.
| Complementary colours are any two colours which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green. In the illustration above, there are several variations of yellow-green in the leaves and several variations of red-purple in the orchid. These opposing colours create maximum contrast and maximum stability.
For wedding flowers this gives you a bold, striking look, for example an yellow bouquet against a violet bridesmaids dress.
Eye-catching and very popular.
Monochromatic colours are sets of colours that sit on the same column as another on the artist's colour wheel. They are tints and shades of the same hue.
For example on a pink bridesmaids dress, a pretty bouquet in shades of soft pink, rose, cerises through to dark burgundy would be in this colour harmony. These create a very compatable colour match - very soothing and balanced design.

This pretty brides bouquet in shades of pinks through to white is an example of a monchromatic colour harmony.
