Guide by Best Blooms – Auckland’s local florist. Learn about birth flowers, NZ native blooms, and birthstones by month.
Have you ever wondered what your birth flower is — or which birthstone matches your star sign? Here’s a fun chart that lists each month alongside its star signs and symbols, traditional birth flowers, and birthstones.
New Zealanders, take note: when birth flowers by month were first set, they followed the Northern Hemisphere’s seasons. So while it’s fascinating to explore these floral traditions, remember that our Kiwi seasons bloom differently down here in Aotearoa.
💐 It’s all part of the fun — and great inspiration when choosing birthday flowers or meaningful gifts for friends and family. Whether you’re guided by the stars, the stones, or the stems, we’ve got ideas to make every month special.

1. What is my NZ birth flower? Each month has a traditional birth flower and a native New Zealand equivalent. For example, February’s is the Violet, while NZ’s version is the Mount Cook Buttercup.
2. Can I send birth flowers as birthday gifts? Absolutely. Birth flowers are a thoughtful twist on standard birthday bouquets — a way to personalise the gift with meaning.
3. Are NZ birth flowers available year-round? Not always. Some are seasonal. When out of season, our florists suggest blooms in matching colours or symbolism.
4. What’s the connection between birthstones, star signs, and flowers? They share symbolic qualities — colour, personality traits, or seasonal energy — which makes them a natural trio for gifting inspiration.
The NZ native birth-flowers element of this guide was first inspired by a community discussion on r/newzealand. From that starting point, our florists carried out additional research to align each suggested native bloom with New Zealand’s true flowering seasons and cultural relevance. These choices reflect the real-world availability we see in store each year and our ongoing love for NZ’s native flora.
